Words, words and words
Copywriting is the art of writing words for selling – whether it’s a product, a service, or even a thought – with the purpose of giving voice to a brand. It involves choosing words carefully, because the real-estate on any media is often, limited.
Well, you may ask, "Is there a certain size or length of copy that one needs to follow for advertising copy?" Yes and Nay, we say! Thanks to shrinking attention-span, lately readers have been losing interest in reading a piece of advertisement. Which is why brand-owners have been pushing their advertising agencies to keep the copy 'as short as possible’. Hey, but ‘short copy’ isn’t the focus or the objective. The focus and the objective is about getting the messaging right with the right 'number' of words or expression. This just means, every word used in an ad must have a purpose – and no word should be used as a mere filler or to bloat the length of the copy for self-fulfillment.
Remember, good copy doesn’t swap details for length – simple as that!
So, what’s a 'good copy'?
Should good copy be creative, catchy, short, informative, clever, smart, long - what?
Strangely, none of the above. Because good copy is one that sells - not just tells.
When it comes to copy, it is indeed important to be creative, concise, catchy – most significantly, it should be informative. But none of these would count if the copy doesn’t sell or is distant from reaching its intended goals. THE PURPOSE OF COPY IS TO SELL.
Come to think of it, the world of advertising is filled with legendary ‘long copy’ advertisements that are considered masterpieces in their own right.
If long, repetitive, uninformative, boring and gibberish copy sells, then that could easily be labelled as ‘good copy’; but it is highly unlikely that long, repetitive, uninformative, boring and gibberish copy will sell what it's intended to.
